2020
The Kyoto Conference on Arts, Media & Culture (KAMC2020)

MET EVALUATIVE CRITERION: None, according to the Criteria document, because there is no proceeding. However, I believe being peer-reviewed to present at this dynamic conference still indicates the value of the research and the case study in this presentation.

ABSTRACT
Dallas has been one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S. Yet, how do average people feel about living in the city? What are untold stories beyond gleaming office towers? To uncover and present these stories, I took part in a collaborative project “Faces of Dallas”, a multi-medium choir concert featured in the 2019 Dallas Soluna International Music and Arts Festival. It involved 30 collaborators, including poets, artists, designers, composers and musicians. The team conducted dialogues with people of the city through online and written surveys, with over 1,000 responses, as well as indepth interviews. Those voices were then woven into a complete creative program, which fused choral music, visual art, video and onsite installation. In this presentation, I will present the complex process of the project, and share how designers can apply conceptual and creative skills in multi-disciplinary collaborations. The findings will provide guidelines to consider by designers engaging in projects that create values to the community.
